“ I love the outdoors; it’s stimulating, healthy and, as I have seen with my own children, offers endless natural learning opportunities
I love working for TOG and being involved with the development of The Outdoors School (TOS). Seeing learners who have ‘failed’ in other settings thrive with us is amazing! They want to be with us as their attendance shows. Finding ways to develop exciting projects that allow children to begin to enjoy learning and develop friendships and trust adults is just an absolute privilege.I see our role at TOS as opening doors for our young people that would otherwise be closed. Even on the cold, wet muddy days when things may not necessarily run smoothly, I still see how far our learners have already come and I know that we are offering something very unique and special, and I feel proud to be part of that. I genuinely love my job, how great is that!
Beverley Garland
KS4 Coordinator at The Outdoors School
“ My beginnings with the company were 4 years or so ago down to happenstance, a meeting arranged by a mutual contact at the last minute with Shevek Pring (one of our Directors) and Nick Murphy (our Forest School Manager) over a few coffees in a small Exmouth café. It felt right, even at that point with me knowing very little about the company
It became apparent very quickly that not only the values of the company but its people as well matched mine and I had found my place. It didn’t on the whole feel like going to work and without wanting to sound trite, my colleagues very quickly became another family. That has stuck throughout. From the dozen or so staff when I began to the near one hundred now, we are still a family, the company values us and understands that putting the needs of its staff first is not just good business sense but just a bloody nice ethos to have.
To answer the question finally after much rambling, I work for TOG because simply I love it, the company, the people, the ethos, its values, the sense of community and the fact that on top of all that, we are providing an invaluable service to the young people and families of Devon and now beyond.
Jake Ward
TLP Area Manager for North Devon
“ Why do I work for The Outdoors Group? Where to begin! I love the feeling of being part of a family that resonates throughout the company, everyone genuinely looks out for and supports each other
I love the flexibility, as a home-educating mum of three, it’s fantastic to have a job that I can fit around my other ‘job’ at home. I love how fun it is, each work day is full of laughter and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. But mostly, I work for The Outdoors Group because I truly believe that they are doing essential work and making impactful changes not only to the young people we work with but the wider educational community as well.

Volunteer with us
Whilst we do welcome volunteers to join us at our forest schools, we try to prioritise volunteering opportunities to those undertaking their Forest School Assistant/Leader Training with us. In this circumstance you will be required to attend and observe a couple of sessions before taking the lead in running activities in order to complete your coursework portfolio. When planning activities, you need to liaise closely with your site manager to ensure the suitability of the activity and to allow for us to gather resources where needed.
Want to find out more about Forest School Assistant/Leader Training?
However, if you are not training with us and would still like to enquire about volunteering at our forest school sessions, please email us at [email protected] and tell us a bit about yourself and what you might be interested in doing and we’ll get back in touch.
Please note that due to the high standards we maintain and to assure consistency for our attendees, we can only accept one volunteer at a time for a particular run of sessions, we also ask that our volunteers commit to attending for a minimum of a half terms run of sessions. All volunteer placements are subject to a enhanced DBS check being completed and the decision about whether to accept a volunteer is at the discretion of our site managers.
